Water Problems
What's Going On With Your Water?
Most homeowners don't call us asking for a treatment system. They call because the shower has buildup, the water smells strange, or the laundry is coming out orange. Start with what you're actually noticing — the equipment question comes later.
You don't need to name it Describing what you see, smell or taste is enough. Identifying the cause is our job, and it usually takes a reading rather than a guess.

Find It by What You Notice
The same symptom can have more than one cause, so some items below appear in more than one place. That overlap is exactly why testing matters.
You can see it
- Orange, red or brown staining Sinks, tubs, toilets, laundry
- Black specks or dark staining Often alongside iron
- Cloudy water, grit or particles Clogged aerators, debris in fixtures
- White crusty buildup, spotted glassware Scale on fixtures and in appliances
- Blue-green staining Below faucets, in tubs and showers

By Name
The Eight We See Most
Hard Water
Dissolved calcium and magnesium. Scale, spotting, poor lather, buildup in appliances. Extremely common here on both well and city water.
Hard waterIron
Orange or reddish staining and a metallic taste. Whether it's dissolved or already oxidised changes how it's treated.
IronManganese
Black specks and dark staining, often found alongside iron — and generally harder to treat than iron alone.
ManganeseSulfur / Rotten Egg Odor
Hydrogen sulfide. Whether the smell is in all water or only the hot water points to two very different causes.
Sulfur odorSediment
Sand, silt, rust or scale particles. Clouds water, clogs fixtures, and wears on any equipment downstream.
SedimentChlorine Taste & Odor
The disinfectant residual in municipal water. Whether your utility uses chlorine or chloramine changes the treatment.
ChlorineAcidic Water / Low pH
Blue-green staining and accelerated wear on copper plumbing. Correcting pH also affects how other treatment performs.
Acidic waterWell-Water Problems
The starting point if you're on a private well. Conditions rarely arrive one at a time.

Why the Same Symptom Can Have Different Causes
Orange staining is usually iron — but the treatment differs depending on whether that iron is still dissolved in the water or has already oxidised into visible particles. A rotten-egg smell can come from the water itself or from a reaction happening inside your water heater, and those are fixed in completely different ways. Cloudy water might be sediment, or it might be air.
This is the practical reason we test rather than assume. It isn't caution for its own sake — it's the difference between buying equipment that solves your problem and buying equipment that doesn't.
A note on health and safety
The pages in this section describe aesthetic and nuisance water concerns — staining, taste, odor, scale and their effects on plumbing. If your concern is the safety of your drinking water, the right path is laboratory testing through a certified lab along with guidance from your county health department or the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. We're glad to talk through results, but we don't make health claims about water and we don't advise anyone to skip that step.
